THE OPEN FORUM

This site is operated by the Silverbacks Wrestling Club of Mira Mesa as a courtesy to San Diego wrestlers. The site's purpose is to provide Senior level wrestlers (over 18 - Senior Men, Senior Women, University, and Fila Jr) a place where they can find training facilities and partners, open mats, and information on upcoming tournaments, and wrestlers planning to go "tripping" to tournaments like Sunkist Kids and US Nationals.

US Navy 32nd Street Team (SOPAC)

For years, the NAVY 32nd Street Wrestling Team (SOPAC), under the command of Commodore Juan Chavez, along with various Marine Corps participants from the bases in the area were the mainstay of the SDWA senior competition. After 911 the team gradually declined as it and members of the Marines were called to duty in Iraq. Since the Commodore's retirement last year, the SOPAC Team has not competed. Former team member, Luke Barker sent in some pictures of SOPAC teams.

2008 Olympic Year Senior Challenge

Wrestlers always like a challenge, and 2008 is an Olympic year. Have you got the dream????

Usually the previous year's US Nationals is a jumping off point for those throwing their hat on the mat going to make a run for an Olympic Team berth. And 2007's US Nationals was no different, all but one weight class in Greco, Freestyle and the Women's divisions had the top 10 wrestlers in the country, and that weight class had 9 of the top 10. The newly crowned NCAA champions showed up in force. And World Team Trials in June promises to be a replay of the Nationals. Don't miss it if you have the opportunity to be in Las Vegas on June 9th and 10th.

If you want to be a part of the Olympic year, then take up our SDWA Senior Challenge.

Senior Challenge

Train hard for the upcoming season that starts in September 2007.
Wrestle in the SDWA tournaments from September to mid-November 2007.
Wrestle in Sunkist International Open in Tempe, AZ, October 26-27, 2007.
and/or
Wrestle at NYAC Holiday Championships, in NYC, NY, November 17-18, 2007.
Wrestle in the SDWA tournaments from March thru June 2008.
Wrestle in California State Senior or FILA Jr Championships in March 2008.
Wrestle at Senior, Veterans, or FILA Jr US Nationals in Las Vegas, NV in April 2008.
Go to the OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS at the MACK Arena in Las Vegas in June 2008. Even if you don't qualify to wrestle, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity.

To get started, if you are not already on the mat somewhere, hook up with one of the clubs in your area listed on this page, or head for Palomar College this summer. You might also check out the Valhalla Wrestling Forum...there's always a lot of great postings there. All you need is a USAW wrestling card and a will to compete and push yourself to a higher level. Then start tournamenting in the fall...

Our whole purpose is to get you on the mat wrestling and hitting the tournament circuit at the local, state, regional, and national levels. It doesn't matter which club you are wrestling for, just so long as you keep bringing it! And are having fun doing it!

The San Diego Wrestling Association (SDWA) is the local USAW organization for Senior level wrestlers.
Check out it's website for the latest tournament information. Senior Women and Veterans are invited to wrestle in the Senior Men's division if there are not enough Veterans or Women in a weight class.

Senior Men (born before 1988, ‘88-‘89 require medical certificate) 121, 132, 145.5, 163, 185, 211.5, 264.5.
Sr. Women (born before 1988, ’88-90 require medical certificate) 105.5, 112, 121, 130, 138.5, 147.5, 158.5.
